  • England win first aches test

    ashes first test 630x280

England go 1-0 up against Australia in the 2013 Ashes series.

This was an unforgettable first test against Australia at Trent Bridge which climaxed with England eventually claiming victory by just 14 runs. James Anderson became England’s here on the last day by claiming 4 wickets which made 10 in total for him over the course of the match.

Earlier on in the day it was looking a formality that England would take victory as the wickets fell until Australia’s final pair of Brad Haddin and James Pattinson took Australia to the brink of victory with a stubborn partnership of 65. Haddin though was caught behind off Anderson with the slightest of edges which was only confirmed after a painstaking review.

You could feel the tension review as the England players celebrated amid astonishing scenes where it was clear how much this meant to England. Anderson in particular had much to celebrate as he was awarded ‘Man of the Match’.

Australia had started the day needing 137 runs to win with just 4 wickets left so victory for England looked inevitable especially when Ashton Agar, Mitchell Starc and Peter Siddle were all caught at slip by Alastair Cook from Anderson’s bowling. But then the last stand commenced and before we knew it. 4′s were being scored all over the ground and Australia were catching up rapidly.

This made for some serious nerve jangling and that awful feeling that looms when defeat could be snatched from the jaws of victory. Anderson was brought back into the frame after some time off from bowling caused by cramp and how glad England were for his return. He delivered the final blow and England players erupted with delight.

This will go down in history as one of the greatest test matches as the game ebbed and flowed and will be remembered for the narrow margin of vistory for England, Anderson’s bowling and a remarkable debut for Australia’s Ashton Agar who at just 19 scored 98 runs in the first innings batting as last man. Truly memorable!

We can now look forward to the 2nd test beginning at Lords on Thursday and England will be aware now that they’re maybe not as strong favourites as they originally thought.
